CAR BOOT SALE
St Patrick's Day at Flancare Park sees the first of our Car Boot Sales for this season, 11am-3pm. The Car Boot Sales are really extremely important to us as a source of revenue and therefore we hope that this season we'll be as successful if not more so than before. We have a top class location for the event and all last season, we managed to attract stall holders from all over Ireland as well as a huge amount of local buyers and sellers. Traffic stopping when going to and from the west of Ireland has also made a significant contribution to the overall success. Our rates are excellent and the atmosphere out at Flancare on Car Boot Day is always top class craic. Apart from the craic, some great bargains have picked up over the years. When you think of the Chinese vase sold at auction down in Kilkenny recently, you just never know the value you can pick up at a Car Boot Sale. Just in case you didn't hear, the vase was valued at 150 euro but sold on for well in excess of one hundred thousand. And apart from the genuine bargains to be had, the first three charity stalls registered are free. This too was very popular last year, with many charities making a bucket full of euros for many worthy causes. If you have never been out, now's the time to experience one of Ireland's Car Boot Sales. Remember the date St Patrick's Day at Flancare, you can't lose.
THRILLING START
Meanwhile, on the pitch, we got off to a flying start on Saturday night last with a great 3-2 win over Finn Harps. Well by the end of the game, we could say it was a great start. The game itself started badly when we went behind to a deflected goal. After their dream start, their travelling and noisy fans really got behind the Harps and despite Lester smacking a rocket off their crossbar, we were fortunate enough to go in at half time, just one down. As their fans chanted Finn Harps, Finn Harps, with their lovely Donegal twang, it sounded more like Fun Harps Fun Harps, but we certainly weren't having much fun.Tony Cousins certainly gave some half time talk between sips of tea. While the over- worked Supporters Club committee were still washing up in the Clubhouse, Mc Donagh and Hynes had us one up in a matter of minutes. (And talking of minutes, the clock wasn't very helpful and seemed to have a mind of its own) but as the half wore on, we really gelled and took control of the game. Sub keeper Stephen Conlon, in particular grew in confidence, especially with a few great saves towards the end. With the game delicately poised at 3-2 he flew high between two taller Harps men to pluck the ball out of the night sky . Earlier Chris Deans had put us two ahead with a lovely header but they clawed one back to leave us on tender hooks entering the final part of the game. And if we smashed the crossbar, Harps hit the upright too in the second half.Overall it was excellent entertainment and with five great goals and a good travelling Finn Harps support, it really was a thrilling start to our campaign. There were representatives from Shels and Monaghan keeping a close eye on proceedings and both were well impressed. Also it was lovely to see our old friend Pascal Quinn along with his son Terry there. Others spotted in the good sized attendance were Phil Munnelly, our co sponsor who travelled over from London and the two Kirbys who with Sean Prunty got the LUAS in from Ballinalee. No doubt Sean will get to mention us on MNS soon.
SMOOTH PARK
Quick Park sponsor Fingal but we now have our own Smooth Car Park, following excellent work by Seamus Murray. The John Deere was out doing some overtime on Saturday and it certainly made a huge and impressive difference. Hopefully, now it can settle in nicely and that the pot holes will become a thing of the past.
SPRING CLEAN
Fair play to Paddy Conway on the excellent spring clean being carried out around the ground. The corridor under the stand has been completely transformed as have the changing rooms. And Paddy assures us that he's not finished yet. If he gets the good weather to continue, he hopes to have all the steps painted yellow by our next home game. Archie Bell and Paddy also got working on the seats and did a marvelous job in time for kick off. The dug outs were also moved which is good news for all those in the mini stand inside the gates as it provides much improved vision now.
BUS TO MONAGHAN
This Friday night we take on a very strong Monaghan side. Last season they did finished well up the table and don't get nearly as much credit as they should. They have a lovely tidy set up and are very strong on the field. They have managed to hold on to more players from last season than any other club which makes them a very settled outfit. Last week-end, they should have taken all three points from Shels up in Tolka which is no mean achievement. We'll be without Christopher Deans and John Lester who are both suspended and will be sorely missed. To counteract this set back we're organising a bus to help raise spirits. Ring Liam, our Transport manager on 087 6141926. But be warned, if there aren't enough to fill the bus by WEDNESDAY EVENING, then you'll have to take out your bike. Please book early.
AIRTRICITY LAUNCH
Airtricity are our the new League sponsors and they kicked off the new season in some style recently up in Dublin. They had all the club captains or reps in the various club colours which made for a pretty picture. But they weren't happy just to have the main men present. They included models Jenny Lee Masterson and Georgia Selpa for the photos. Now, I ask you in all fairness, how fair is that? Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Jenny Lee or Georgia, I'm sure they're lovely lassies who are interested in the beautiful game and all that. But why pay outside models when we could have produced the same and indeed much better for the same amount of money? We have any amount who could take their place, Louise Bell, Caroline Rhatigan, Carmel Browne, Caitriona Kirby and that's only our back four.
CHOIR MEETING
Following their lack lustre performance on Saturday night, Section O retired to the Market Bar for some choir practice for upcoming fixtures. They're also hard at work on a short witty ditty to sing when Cork City FORAS Co Op come up to Flancare. But they're finding it difficult to get anything to rhyme with the afore mentioned southern club. They're open to all ideas from any students of poetry and song.
HOWYA JANETTE
The Supporters' Club would like to say a special hello to Janette Devlin who is currently in hospital in Dublin. For countless seasons, Janette has been a regular out in Flancare and she was sorely missed on Saturday night. I'm sure you were us in spirit Janette and that you shared a smile with us all when you heard the good result. Looking forward to having you back with us as soon as you can. Hello too to Noel Nolan, our loyal friend and true supporter from Legan. No doubt as soon as the weather gets a bit warmer, we'll be seeing Noel again at the front of the stand. I bet Noel knew that former Town star player Dave Mooney scored for Charlton at the week-end.
