Supporters Club Notes (19/02/12)

DROGS DRAW

Our first home friendly was played last Saturday night against Premier side Drogheda Utd and it ended in a one all draw. It was a terrific opportunity for us to see our new signings in action and it was heartening to see so many turn up on a cold night. The game itself certainly didn’t disappoint and judging by the team’s efforts and skill levels, we should be in for a very good and interesting season ahead. All we want now is a huge support to come out every other Saturday night to support our own team. Austin Skelly has lost none of his silken skills and it was good to see him get on the scoresheet, hopefully many more will follow when the real action commences. Keith Gilespie was also in top form but maybe that was because he was celebrating his birthday. It was great too, to see Jamie Duffy, a previous player of the month winner, making a welcome return to Flancare. And keeping a happy watchful eye on proceedings was Phil Munnelly, one of our valued sponsors. Overall, it was great to be back in Flancare and great to see so many familiar faces both on and off the pitch. Hopefully, it’s not tempting fate to say, the future looks promising.

SLIGO SLIP IN

This Saturday afternoon we welcome top flight side Sligo Rovers slip in to Flancare , kick off 2.30. Sligo Rovers have been flying the flag for Cup winners along the N4 in our absence but we’ll be back shortly to lighten their load! We of course had road signage wishing them well in their Aviva exploits and our number one travelling fan, Marty Stapleton won the hearts of many young Sligo lassies when he was featured on RTE Sport holding his sign aloft. But this time round, Marty will be leading the Section O choirboys and girls in favour of his favourite red and black.

It promises to be a fascinating final friendly as Sligo at the time of writing are still searching for a new manager to replace Cook but have assembled a powerful squad in anticipation of winning the League this season. And then there’s Alan Kirby who will be playing against his former club. As well as all that, Sligo Rovers have said they will be bringing a large crowd of supporters with them, so it’s an afternoon not to be missed. Could our final friendly be the FAI Cup Final of 2012 as forecast by one noted fortune teller?

CAR BOOT SALE

Johnny Nevin has been busy designing new signage ahead of our first real Bank Holiday Car Boot Sale of 2012. It will be held on Monday March 19th at Flancare 10-3pm and promises to be really huge, if the amount of interest is anything to go by. Some people who travel all over Irealnd , have told us that we’ve the best set up in the land and ours is the one they really look forward to. So if you’re buying or sellling, don’t forget to pencil in Monday March 19th for Falncare’s famous Car Boot Sale.

GET WELL MEL

Everyone in the Supporters’ Club extend their best wishes to Mel Devlin and wish him a speedy return to full health. And whilst sending good wishes, we’d also like to say happy 18th birthday to our great friend and fan Ingrid Nevin.

DAZZLING DON

It’s been some few hectic months for former Town player who left us during last season to join Stevenage. Later today ( this is penned on Sunday morning) he’s a vital part of the squad as they take on the mighty Spurs in the FA Cup. And as if that wasn’t enough, he featured on Sky yesterday morning in a competition in trying to strike the crossbar.Already a firm favourite with the Stevenage fans, we wish Dazzling Don all the best with his new found fame and fortune. By the way, if successful in the cup tie and should they get a home draw next, remember Stevenage is very close to Luton airport which, in turn is very handy from Knock.

BACK PASS

While doing some research on an other topic, a Longford Leader from 50 years agao this week, came to light. De Town had just hammered Dundalk 5-1 and indeed the writer (Donald Keogh?) was none to happy with the poor Dundalk outfit; he wanted a stiffer match. Anyway, preperations by the supporters were being made for a cup trip to Cork and how much was the fare? The huge sum of one pound and it was noted that if all the money wasn’t paid in advance, there would be no bus running. Just thought, you might enjoy that back pass from the past.

Airtricity U19 League of Ireland

Longford Town…………….0
Fanad United………………..1

Report by: Rachael Mc Keon

This weekend saw the Longford Town U19’s make the long trip to the tip of Donegal to take on Fanad Utd in the league. Credit has to go to the staff at Fanad who worked wonders to get one of their pitches playable for this game. Both of their pitches were under water this week due to the inclement weather of late but thankfully they got their second pitch ready for the game. The pitch was heavy but didn’t take away from what turned out to be a great game of football. Longford came into this game on the back of two heavy defeats to Dundalk but started like a team on a mission when Ciaran Fagan starting in midfield for the first time this season put in two great hard but fair tackles on each of the Fanad centre midfielders. This was to set the tone for the day as the away side battled hard for the ninety minutes. Five minutes in it was the home side though that got the first opportunity for a strike on goal as the referee punished an overzealous tackle from Steven Boateng on the edge of the Town box. The resulting free kick was sweetly hit by the Fanad free taker but Town keeper Devlin pulled off a great save to deny Fanad an early goal. From here on the Town were very much on top for the game and tormented the Fanad defence at times. Winger Leo Araujo came closest to opening the scoring for Longford when he took a snap shot from the edge of the box but the Fanad keeper was alert and made a great save. Not long after this Araujo yet again evaded the Fanad defence and Gallagher picked him out with a wonderful ball from the right which he met on the volley only to see his shot go inches wide. The Fanad defence looked like they were struggling to keep the Town at bay with Araujo and Gallagher doing well down the wings and Rossiter and Carberry working hard up front. Just before half time Dean Cosgrave who on Thursday made his first appearance of the year for the Town first team against St. Patricks Athletic in a friendly, played a lovely ball into the channel but unfortunately Rossiter was to be caught just offside. Longford should have gone in ahead at half time but the Fanad keeper must take the credit for his team still being level at the break.

The second half had only begun when Carberry passed a cracking ball to the front post but the keeper just got down to smother the ball before the incoming Rossiter could get his foot to it. Two minutes later Rossiter had a shot from just inside the box which the Fanad keeper managed to get his finger tips to and tip it over the bar. There was a break in play soon after as the referee needed to receive some attention when he was hit full force in the face with the ball as Cosgrave cleared his lines and the unfortunate referee was in the wrong place at the wrong time. As play restarted the Town were on the attack yet again, this time it was Carberry who rounded his marker and as he made his way into the box he got his shot away only for the keeper to smother it at the near post. In the 65th minute Fanad on one of their few meaningful attacks in the game received a free kick on the left just outside the Town box for a foul by a now tiring Fagan. The resulting free kick was struck well and looked to be going in but Devlin got across to palm the ball out and got up quickly to save the rebound. Devlin then sent the ball long and found Cosgrave who flicked it forward into the run of Rossiter that saw the Town striker go one on one with the Fanad keeper. Unfortunately for the striker as the ball bounced he collided with the keeper, but the ball ran free to Araujo on the edge of the box and as he shot towards goal it looked as though he had found the opener but one of the fanad defenders managed to clear the ball off the line. On 68 minutes Fagan who had worked hard all afternoon was replaced by new signing Tommy Cooney. Fanad were starting to come into the game now but it was the away side that were to get the next clear opportunity on goal when Carberry floated in a wonderful corner from the left which Boateng met with a powerful header to send the ball goal ward. Just as everyone in the ground though that this had broken the deadlock the keeper somehow managed to get his hand to the ball and pull it out of the top corner. From the resulting kick out the Town right full back Flannery forced the ball back up field toward the strikers where Rossiter found Araujo but his tired shot was easily gathered by the keeper. Flannery playing out of position in this game played with the type of composure of a player who played in this position for many years. The next meaningful attack of the game was when the trio of Cosgrave, Rossiter and Araujo played some great one two football but Rossiters attempt on goal was foiled yet again by the keeper. After this Fanad put some pressure on the Town defence and but for some top class defending from centre half Boateng they may well have found the opening goal. It didn’t take long for the visitors to re-establish their dominance and Carberry now playing on the left wing was sending some very dangerous balls into the Fanad box but their defence and keeper were standing firm. Twelve minutes from time and totally against the run of play it was the home side that broke the dead lock. They received a corner on the right it was dealt with initially by Devlin who palmed the ball out for another corner and from the second corner the Fanad centre half managed to slip away unnoticed by his marker and drove a powerful header into the back of the net. At this time the away side brought Cheevers on in place of Gallagher who had worked tirelessly for his team all afternoon. Longford were now pushing forward in search of an equaliser which would be the least they deserved for their performance. Cheevers was winning every high ball put in but with Fanad now having six in defence it was a struggle for the Town attack to try and penetrate this. The home side were to have one more chance but Devlin was alert as he had been all day to the danger and saved well. From there on it was all Longford but unfortunately as time ticked by and with a blanket of Fanad defenders in front of them a goal was not to be had in this encounter for the visitors.

It finished 1-0 to the home side but it was a harsh result for Longford who dominated all over the field for the entire game but unfortunately for them they found a Fanad keeper in form to deny them a share of the spoils on this occasion. The Town now have a two week break before their next league game away to Sligo Rovers.

LTFC Player Interview

Longford Town’s man behind the posts, Paul Hunt is being grilled by Town fan, Kieran Burke.

For more great interviews throughout the season, you’ll find them in Longford Town’s official match day programme, available at all home games…

Longford Town's new No. 1 is in the hotseat this week.

Q: So Paul, with just under a month to go now until the 2012 Airtricity League season kicks off, how are you feeling? Excited, nervous, both?

A: I must say I’m feeling very excited about the new season. The nerves haven’t kicked in just yet but I’d say they will a little closer to the first game.

Q: Last season “De Town” finished a very respectable 6th place (11
team division) but with only eight teams taking to the starting grid
in the First Division this season where should the Town be aiming for
 in 2012?

A:The answer to that is simple we’re in it to win it. I truly believe we can win it this year and at least come in the top 3 and get in the play- offs.

Q: The FAI announced the fixtures for the First Division just over a
week ago and its Mervue United away on the opening day, your reaction to that one?

A: It’s a tough game to start as we seen last year when we went down there last year and lost 2-1 to a last minute goal. A lot of players will remember that game and we’ll be going down to fix it this year.

Q: While I’m sure a lot of Town fans were disappointed to be drawn
away on the opening day, the first home game of the season just one
week later well and truly makes up for the extra wait with Athlone
Town visiting the “Flansiro”.  Are you excited to start the home
campaign with such a big game?

A: Yes, it’s a good game to start at home with for the fans and players and hopefully we well get a big enough crowd at the game but it doesn’t matter who we start against there all big games for us this year if we’re going to win the league. We have to look at every game as a big game and our cup final.

Q: Tony Cousins was busy again in the transfer market this pre-season
with Karl Bermingham, Gary Shaw, David McGill, Colly James, Noel
Haverty and Craig Hyland all signing for the club, how have the new
lads settled in during pre-season training?

A: The lads have settled in well, most of the lads knew them from playing with them or against them throughout the years. It’s like they have been there as long as everyone else.

Q: A lot of football fans seem to believe in a bit of a myth when it
comes to goalkeepers that you guys do very little fitness work in
pre-season while the rest of your team mates run their legs off. Can
you give us a little insight into your pre-season schedule?

A: Well it’s not just all the fans, players think it as well but I don’t believe it’s true. Goalkeepers I believe would be as fit as outfield players it’s just a different kind of fitness. Goalkeepers fitness is more about getting up and down whereas players is running around fitness if that makes sense to you. For us we do a lot of short, sharp stuff, going down on the ground getting up quick, moving from side to side quick, also being quick at coming off the lines.

Q: Last season was your first with the club but despite a very
impressive start to your Longford career you seemed to find game time
a little bit tighter towards the end of the campaign with Barbados
‘keeper Alvin Rouse often keeping you out.
Tell us as a goalkeeper how frustrating can a spell on the sidelines
be and with Alvin now gone do you see yourself pushing on personally
this season?

A: Yes, it was frustrating not playing, every player wants to play week in week out. At the end of last season I wasn’t helped by the suspension I got from the Athlone game then I got an injury that we weren’t too sure what it was so it was tough to try get rid of. This season I just intend to get my head down work harder and hopefully push on from last year.

Q: You’re only a young man “Hunty” (21) leaving you with plenty of
time to shine and develop as a goalkeeper and as you are English born
, do you ever think about or dream of a big move back home?

A: Yes of course, it would be a childhood dream. You should always aim to play at the highest level you possibly can and I’m not any different. I just have to put my head down work hard and we’ll just see what happens.

Q: When it comes to goalkeepers you often hear that some of the best
in the business started as outfield players before finally realising
that they in fact had a bit of a knack for shot stopping. Is that the
case for you or were you always destined to play between the sticks?

A: Well I always loved goalkeeping but when I first started playing football for a local side in Kildare, I played as a centre half and then again when I first went up to Bohemians. But when I was about 14, I decided it was a keeper I wanted to be and I haven’t looked back since.

Q: You also often hear some of the top pros talk about people who
inspired them as a youngster, who was your hero as a young boy?

A: My hero was always Peter Schmeichel, he was a great keeper. There were also a few people around me that inspired me to push on, especially my father who had a big impact on my career and still does to this day. My grandfather also helped me in my career. I am lucky to have these people still in my life and I would always listen to the advice they’d give me to me this day. Then there was my goalkeeping coach in the FÁS course I did, and at St. Pats, Brian O’Shea, he was a huge inspiration on my career and he made me believe in myself and push myself on to get where I am today.

Q: And finally Paul it’s our weekly random question………Your most
embarrassing off-field moment?

A: I don’t have many off-field embarrassing moments but it would probably have to be something when I was a bit drunk that I’m not aware of. (Or not willing to tell us eh Hunty?)

Thanks to Paul Hunt and to Kieran Burke for the interview.

Airtricity U19 League of Ireland

Longford Town…………….1
Dundalk………………….5

Report by: Rachael Mc Keon

Longford Town U19’s returned to league action this weekend in front of a large crowd at Oriel Park against Dundalk FC. The Town travelled without a keeper as Fallon (injured) and Devlin (exams) were both unavailable for today’s encounter. After missing out on last weekend’s Cup success against Finn Harps through injury striker Paddy Cheevers stepped up to the mark and went between the posts for Longford. It wasn’t long before he was tested as Dundalk went on attack after attack from the start of the game. It wasn’t just Dundalk pushing forward as Longford pilled pressure on the home side also. The game was played at a blistering pace from the start and this was to continue for the entire ninety minutes. Both defences had plenty to contend with from start to finish. Longford’s striker turned keeper did well in his new role early on and pulled off some fine saves to deny the Dundalk strike force. Eventually though the home side broke the deadlock when in the seventeenth minute the ball was swung into the six yard box and met by the head of the Dundalk midfielder who headed past the inexperienced Cheevers. The Town got right back into it though and were not unnerved by the goal and managed to test the Dundalk keeper after some nice link up play between Carberry, Cosgrave and Rossiter but the home net minder was to deny Carberry’s excellent shot. Both sides continued to battle hard for the remainder of the half but the Town went in 1-0 down at the break.

Dundalk started the second half as they did the first and within five minutes of the restart they went 2-0 up when the ball fell loose in the box and the striker put it past the unfortunate Cheevers in the Town goal. It was only to get worse for Longford three minutes later when the same player was left unmarked in the box and slotted the ball past Cheevers again to make it 3-0 to the home side. Within a matter of minutes with the Longford heads down Dundalk got a throw deep in the Towns half which was linked onto and drilled into the box where an incoming Dundalk player finished well past an out coming Cheevers. At this stage when you would expect a team to totally give up Longford dusted themselves down and showed character to keep fighting for each other and for their pride. With this came a moment of magic that this team has shown more than once this season even when staring defeat in the face. Defender turned striker Effe Sodje weaved his way down the left and showed his strength to hold off the Dundalk defence before laying the ball back to the edge of the box where the incoming Cosgrave hit a powerful shot into the top of the Dundalk net. This goal seemed to spark the Town back to life and gave them hope of redeeming themselves again. They had several chances to add more goals to the score sheet but it was not to be as a mix of the home keeper making some fine saves and some tired shots meant they would get no further rewards for their hard work. With six minutes remaining Dundalk added to their tally when the left winger eluded the Town defence and slotted the ball home at the front post for or a flattering score line of 5-1.

The Town will be hoping they can reverse their fortunes against Dundalk next weekend in the second round of the Cup as they did with Finn Harps in the last round after being beaten the previous weekend in the league by the same opposition. The second round of the Cup will be played in Flancare Park on Sunday at 2pm.

The Longford Town U19 team and management would like to thank Spar Express on the Dublin Rd. in Longford for their kind sponsorship.

Airtricity U19 League of Ireland

Longford Town…………….0
Finn Harps………………….2

Report by: Rachael Mc Keon

The first game of 2012 to be played under lights at Flancare Park served up a football feast between Longford Town U19’s and table toppers Finn Harps. After last weekend’s impressive performance for the Town against Sligo Rovers, they started this game in the same vein and with the same level of intensity. The young Longford lads faced a different battle this weekend as they played a good game of football against a hard hitting very physically strong Harps side, as opposed to Sligo Rovers the previous weekend who played a more attractive style of football. With the tackles flying in hard and fast from both sides from kick off, the referee did well to let the game flow as there was no real malice in any of the tackles. It was level pegging for both sides for the majority of the first half as both teams battled hard. Longford’s Darren Carberry was very commanding down the left side of midfield winning everything that came his way and battling hard to regain possession any time it was lost. Midway through the half Carberry played the ball through to the hardworking Cheevers who set up a lovely ball for Rossiter but unfortunately the ball got tangled in the Town strikers feet and the seemingly inevitable goal was not to be this time round. Devlin kept Longford in it a number of times throughout the game making some vital saves from the Harps strike force. Harps went 1-0 up four minutes from the end of the first half however when the Town lost the ball out wide and the Harps winger played the ball through to the striker who looked to be offside but the linesman kept his flag down and the Harps frontman slotted the ball past the out coming Devlin. The Town will no doubt feel hard done by when minutes later they levelled the scoreline only to have their goal disallowed when scorer Effe Sodje was deemed to be offside. 1-0 it was to Harps at the break.

It was more of the same form the off in the second half from both sides with the tackles coming hard and fast and with them came the chances. Devlin pulled off an impressive double save from close range to deny Harps their second shortly after the restart. Unfortunately for Longford, Harps didn’t have to wait long after that for their second as they floated a corner into the Town box that wasn’t dealt with and they slotted the ball past Devlin in the Town goal. There were a few more half chances from both sides for the remainder of the game but nothing of real significance and it was to remain 2-0 to the visitors despite the best efforts of the hard working Town team.

The Town face Finn Harps again next weekend in Flancare Park at 2pm in the first round of the U19 FAI Cup. This time they will be hoping for a positive result as they look to advance in the competition.

The Longford Town U19 team and management would like to thank Spar Express on the Dublin Rd. in Longford for their kind sponsorship.
